VC Melyd are hosting the North Wales Road Race Series in 2016. It’s an exciting new year with 3 new circuits and the series now includes 5 rounds.  The series remains as a men’s 2/3/4 race with a maximum of 80 participants.  We have proposed to hold a women’s E/1/2/3 race at Rounds 1 and 4 but are awaiting confirmation from Welsh Cycling.

Round 3 – 10th July – Trawsfynydd
Round 4 – 7th August – Llyn Brenig

ROUND ONE – Ruthin

New for 2016 this is a 58.2 mile road race with approx. 4,300ft of climbing. It will start from the Tennis Club in Ruthin before heading out onto the 20 mile circuit.  The circuit will include climbing the twisty bends of the Nant Y Garth, the undulating road to Corwen and the fast winding road back towards Ruthin on the A494.  The race will finish on a tough climb to the iconic Ponderosa which is situated on top of the Horseshoe pass. https://www.strava.com/routes/865407

This 2 day stage race will include a Criterium Race, Hill Climb TT and a Road Race.

Saturday Morning – Criterium Race, Marsh Tracks, Rhyl.

90 minutes Criterium Race at Marsh Tracks, Rhyl.  This fantastic venue hosts great facilities and a purpose built 1.3km closed circuit.  This venue hosts exciting racing and training all year round. https://www.strava.com/segments/1129125

Saturday Afternoon – Hill Climb TT, Rhuallt

This 2.3km Hill Climb will take place on Rhuallt Hill which is used for The Rhyl CC/VC Melyd TT.  The course record is held by the 2014 National Hill Climb Champion Dan Evans with a time of 4.34. The strava segment can be found here: https://www.strava.com/segments/1363298?filter=overall

Sunday Morning – Road Race, Denbigh

The road race will be 54 mile and include 5 laps of the Denbigh road race circuit used last year for the NWRRS. This year will see a different finish to last year.  The race will finish on the Denbigh industrial estate where riders will have to navigate a tight right hand bend before a gradual 400m incline to the finish. https://www.strava.com/routes/865441

ROUND THREE – Trawsfynydd

Another new circuit for 2016 is a 62 mile road race with approx. 5,250ft of climbing. This challenging circuit is on fast open roads through some of North Wales’s best landscapes. The race will start from Trawsfynydd Lakeside Café before heading out onto the 20 mile circuit. There are some short sharp climbs along the circuit and a technical descents to tackle heading into Llan Ffestiniog. ROUND FOUR – Llyn Brenig

The final new circuit of the series is this 63 mile road race with approx. 4,800ft climbing. The circuit will start from Llyn Brenig Visitors Centre and out onto wide open B Roads of the moors. The race then heads down a tricky narrow descent to the A5 and turn sharp left towards Cerrigydrudion. From here the race will climb back up towards Llyn Brenig to complete the 21 mile circuit. https://www.strava.com/routes/865385

ROUND FIVE – Denbigh

NWRR2016jerseys

Big thanks the Darran Acton at ‘Champion Systems UK’ for supplying the series leader jerseys for the NWRR series. After each round the series leader will be issued a jersey to wear at the next round. The first jerseys will be handed out at round 2 for over 23/under 23.
